California trip

After having visited the biggest/greatest Java Conference I’ve seen so far, me and my colleague had some time (8 days) to spend before leaving the States. Although San Fransisco is said to be one of the nicest (and/or most European) cities of the USA, I’m not so much of a city dweller that I’d skip the chance to see some of the beauties of nature California has to offer. I’ve brought enough camping gear (tent, sleeping mat and bag, cooking gear, etc) and -not to forget- some photographic equipment to keep me entertained for a few days at the National and State Parks in the neighborhood.

At Friday night, just after the conference has finished, we fly to LA and pick up a rental car. We hired the simplest (cheapest) model available from budget, but trough some mix-up we get out from the rental service bus at the wrong location. Our car isn’t there and there’s no support except for a phone. We’re supposed to choose any car from parking lot B, and even though I recommended a 5-door for our camping trip, my companion insisted we take

the Mustang (1)… This turned out to be an all-time favorite; at least once a day people would come up and compliment us on our choice :-)

On Saturday we spend a whole day at the Six Flags just up L.A. After the first 8 rides it’s hard to tell up from down, but after I get the hang of it I have to tell there’s nothing quite like it…

In the next few days we travel through Sequoia and King’s Canyon N.P.. It’s beautiful and serene; driving along small roads, hiking through the snow and end the days with camp fire.

Abundant wildlife to spot includes rattle snake, brown bears, chip munks and different kinds of deer.

The weather treats us well. When we pass Yosemite N.P. it feels a bit overrated to me. I like Sequoia and King’s Canyon better, but that’s because I prefer less people and more nature :-)

We trade Yosemite for mono-lake. This ends the daily hikes but gives way to cool Mustang driven trips!

We end in

Santa Cruz (2) before flying home…
